During WWII, the James Nelson family of Kalamazoo, Michigan had all six of their sons as well as their one son-in-law serving in the United States armed forces at the same time. Sharon Holston, a graduate student at Indiana University South Bend and the great-granddaughter of James and Vera Nelson, told the story of the Nelson sons in "Kalamazoo's First Family of the Armed Forces: The Nelsons and World War II". The Nelson boys were in the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Corp. One son, Stephen, was Killed in Action while piloting a P-51 fighter while serving in England. Thankfully, the other six, Kendrick, Leo, Lyle, Arthur, Joel and Paul, came home safely. Sharon Holston hopes to publish her work so that more people can learn about the Nelson family and their sacrifices, struggles and achievements.
